Apparently it’s spring, but it’s been snowing and we’ve been wearing Moon Boots, eyeballing our new spring pastel two-piece-suit that’s crying out to be worn.
We may not be able to embrace our spring clobber quite yet but we can give a subtle nod to the new-season with a spectacular mani.
We stop by for (almond milk) lattes with Laura Southern, owner and founder of House of Lady Muck (HOLM) to talk the coolest nail trends right now.
FF. What’s trending in nails right now?
HOLM. The Lady Muck Nail Design manicure is the most popular, it’s a Shellac manicure with bespoke nail art on top. People tend to scroll through our Instagram and find something they like and bring it in to show us and we create it for them.
Copper and gold striping tape is very popular at the moment, dots and playing around with different tips. We have designs like ‘Get Your Tips Out’, ‘The Dot Cotton’ and ‘Walk the Line’. I come up with all the branding for the business and for me that’s the most exciting bit.
FF. We saw a lot of neutrals, nudes, and soft matte pink manis on the catwalk at Sophia Webster, Peter Pilotto, Mugler and Antonio Beradi. We love a clean, chic look – what’s your take on neutral manis?
HOLM. We’ve just launched the new CND nude collection – you should check out our shades Unlocked, Unmasked, Unearthed and Uncovered. We’ve got amazing nude colours to recreate the perfect nude mani.
We’ve just worked on a big campaign with Nike and Office and the brief was nude nails. We also did Maya Jama’s (Stormzy’s girlfriend) nails for the cover of YOU magazine that was out last Sunday, we used ‘Nude Knickers’ on Maya.
We’ve also just worked on Sophie Hulme’s new brand lookbook, the brief was a completely natural manicure. So nude manicures are definitely a thing right now.
FF. At FF HQ we consider Leopard print a neutral. We’re obsessed. Kenzo showcased beautiful animal print nails. What’s your take on animal print nails for spring?
HOLM. I love leopard print, we’re introducing a cool leopard print tip.
FF. There were tonnes of fake nails on the catwalk – talons with nail art and lettering, diamontes and piercings at Fenty, Byblos, Ryan Lo and Jeremy Scott. The faux nail trend is obviously not going anywhere for a bit is it?
HOLM. No, nowhere. As we expand that is something we’ll be offering. I’m waiting to find the perfect artist to join us. For the time being we offer all the other additions like lettering, jewels, foiling and crystals.
FF. We love a Shellac manicure at FF, what’s the best advice to make it last and not let it destroy our nails?
HOLM. You need to use solar oil twice a day to keep your nails hydrated and NEVER pick it off, always get it removed and reapplied properly.
FF. What about dark colours for summer like black nails at Phillip Lim. Chic or weak?
HOLM. Absolutely chic. Short dark nails are classic. I am a big fan of navy nails. It looks so stylish.
FF. We spotted glitter oval nails at Tom Ford. How do you feel about glitter?
HOLM. Errrrr. I LOVE glitter. Our tagline is ‘don’t be bitter wear glitter’. Clients come in thinking they’re not glitter fans and usually leave loving it and wearing it.
We have every kind of glitter you could dream of. Arielle Fried was in on Sunday and she had my personal favourite the Aquamarine Chunky Glitter Paint.
FF. We think to feel sophisticated and chic in an instant a short red manicure is the go-to, as spotted at Sonia Rykiel and Giorgio Armani, thoughts?
HOLM. Completely agree. Best red is ‘Wild Fire’ by CND – it’s bright. Match your lipstick for the perfect look.
FF. There were pastel iridescent nails at Paul Costelloe, how do you feel about pastels?
HOLM. We 100% love pastels at HOLM. My favourite at the moment ‘Creekside’ – it’s a pastel blue. I’m wearing it right now with a metallic tape down the middle and everyone is going mad for it.
FF. Khaki and camo is making a comeback in the fashion stakes – yay! Should we match our nails with our trousers/shirt/jacket?
HOLM. I love what Roksanda did at her last show – a bright green nail with a line border around it. I’m looking forward to create a HOLM take on this look.
Laura launched her business HOLM in 2017 through pure grit and determination – ‘I wanted to create a gorgeous and personable space to be pamper and be pampered in’. Set within The Lion & The Fox Salon, that also houses a gallery it’s a dream spot to get beautified and unwind. Laura and her team also cater to private parties, pop-ups and fashion events. HOLM also offers pedicures and threading. ‘Whatever your need, we’ve got your back babes…’
