Last night, and to New York for the Met Gala, the annual event that raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Arts costume institute. It’s where the who’s who of celebsville try to out-dress each other in a plethora of outrageous outfits. See Katie Perry’s 8-foot wings. The theme this year: Heavenly Bodies – Fashion & The Catholic Imagination. Sure.
Bad gal Riri, sartorial Queen of the Met Gala turned up as the Pope, courtesy of John Galliano at Maison Margiela. Nailed it.
Riri’s outfit featured a heavily jeweled Mitre hat and extravagant cape, over a mini dress. It really doesn’t get more ‘on brand’ than that.
The Met Gala + Riri + John Galliano = pure perfection.
Kimmy K left Kanye at home (with a cold flannel on his head) and hit the red carpet solo in a golden 80s-esque gown by Donatella Versace, which worked exceedingly well in showing off what her mama gave her (hmmm). Slightly subtler than Riri’s 2018 homage, Kimmy wore a couple of crosses about her neck as a nod to the gods. Her look was less Catholic Imagination but a whole lot Heavenly.
Speaking of heavenly, cue Irina Shayk and Bradley Cooper. The dream couple were bedecked in Versace. Irina really was the golden girl in a floor-sweeping Versus gown, complete with train, thigh split and what looked like little angel wings fluttering about the skirt.
Rita Ora really does scrub up very nicely, doesn’t she? Her ethereal Prada gown was sheer and flowing and utterly elegant, finished expertly with long gloves, poker straight hair, a red pout and a gothic halo. That’s our summer wedding inspiration right there.
Gal of the moment and mummy-to-be, Cardi B went all out for her first ever Met Gala appearance, and she didn’t disappoint. Showing up on the arm of fashion beast Jeremy Scott who had custom made Cardi’s pearl-encrusted Moschino gown. His outfit perfectly matched Cardis, naturally. They were a real-life Barbie and Ken.
Anna Wintour who was a host for the event looked sensational in white lace custom-made Chanel; she turned up with her daughter Bee Shaffer, who wore Valentino and nodded to the religious theme with her clutch bag.
Lena Waithe rocked the red carpet in a rainbow cape, ‘gramming:
The first black woman to win an Emmy for Comedy Writing (last year) interpreted the Gala’s theme as ‘just be yourself’.
In her Emmy acceptance speech, she famously said of her LGBTQIA family ‘Every day when you walk out the door, put on your imaginary cape and go out there and conquer the world. Because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it,’ Last night the cape was very real. And got us all talking. Clappy hands to Lena.
Ariana Grande looked like a gorgeous little human mural. Her chiffon hair bow and eye-flicks were utterly adorable and will inspire all of our summer event make-up.
Jared Leto rocked it for the men in head to toe Gucci, accompanied by none other than Alessandro-the-Gucci-great and Lana Del Rey.
